Wine 101: The "back wine grape of Piedmont," dolcetto means "little sweet one" – a reference not to the sugar content of the grape, but because of its preciousness in Italy's northwest hillsides. Dolcetto d'Alba is one of seven DOC classified regions, and the one best known for its extraordinary mineral-rich Barolo and Barbarescos.

Why to buy: This Dolcetto d'Alba is an excellent-quality table wine that gives a glimpse of the winemaking traditions in this historic region. For under $25, you'll get intense berry fruits and beautifully balanced tannins – a flavor profile mirroring its pricier siblings, Barolo and Barbaresco, but at a bargain.

Nose, palate and pairing: Brimming with aromas of lavender and violets, and flavors of wild red berries, juicy cherries, and hints of almond, we love this wine with classics of the region: antipasti, fresh pasta and roasted lamb.

The backstory: The green, misty hills of the Langhe region of Piedmont undulate in waves as far as the eye can see. Dotted with castles and vineyards, it looks like one of those far away fairytale lands. The Ada Nada family fell in love with this landscape in 1919, and have been producing wines evocative of the region ever since.

We Love This With

Of the three dominant red wines of Piedmont, the Dolcetto varietal is the lightest and most approachable. Dolcetto is a perfect week night companion: She loves a steaming bowl of al dente pasta slick with garlicky, homemade tomato sauce, croutons of pancetta strewn throughout and a little freshly grated parm on top. Snuggle up with your pup and you have a perfect evening, the three of you.
