Barbera was once the undefined middle child of Piedmont, struggling for an identity. Her older sibling Nebbiolo was a chronic overachiever, and her younger sibling Dolcetto was always the “fun” one. But thoughtful producers like the Hilberg family, decided to nurture her potential. Barbera was given sunnier hillside sites for growing, was cropped for quality and given a home in oak to age; the result is a deeply colored wine with nuances of fresh berry fruit, layers of vanilla and oak, and lively, food-loving acidity. The Hilberg Superiore proves that both nature and nurture matter.

It is obvious that farming is in Michele's blood; his family's farm was founded in the early 20th century. His wines are some of the best to come out of Piemonte in recent years and are a reflection of his dedication to organic farming and symbiosis with nature.

We Love This With

We love Barbera—she plays nice with lots of foods. Her gentle tannins, balanced fruit and fresh acidity make her a great playmate for everything from grilled, roasted, stewed and braised meats. With cool autumnal evenings fast approaching, we are particularly enticed by a whole chicken stuffed with herbs, mushrooms, garlic and a huge pat of butter, roasting in the oven, with a glass of Barbera d’Alba on the side.
