Why We Love Them
Cranberry Island Kitchen only uses butter from Kate’s Homemade Butter, churned by the Patry family in Old Orchard Beach, Maine. They think the butter is one of the reasons why their whoopie pies are the “best on the planet.” Even Martha Stewart is a fan: She stumbled upon Karen and Carol’s chocolate whoopies in a small shop in Maine, and asked the two to be on her show. The whoopie’s origins are an ongoing tussle between Pennsylvanians, Maine-iacs, and Bostonians, but Maine made whoopies the official state treat after tracing its roots to a Bangor woman who melded leftover bits of cake into a frosted sandwich.
