Heidi Barrett is the fairy godmother of California wine. You can't afford to miss out on this spectacular sold-out wine. - Jen Pelka, Gilt Taste Managing Editor

Why you should buy: Currently sold out market-wide, this rare wine comes from Napa’s most lauded winemaker, Heidi Barrett. She’s the winemaker Robert Parker called the “First Lady of Wine.”

Nose and palate: Ripe fruit, red cherry and blooming violets on the nose and nuanced notes of licorice, mocha and mint on the palate. It’s an elegant wine bursting with layers of fruit.

The backstory:Heidi Barrett’s resume reads like the catalogue for a dream cellar: She’s made some of the best vintages of Screaming Eagle, Paradigm, Dalla Valle and Lamborn Family Vineyards, to name just a handful. Alongside John Schwartz, Heidi is blending Vin Perdu under her personal label. Vin Perdu means, “lost wine,” in French, a reference to Pain Perdu, the beloved dish that transforms “lost,” day-old bread into a dreamy, custard-like, buttery, brown-sugared French toast. Each year Heidi blends small lots to craft her Vin Perdu, a wine that she feels represents the best elements of the vintage. Each vintage is truly unique and only 12 barrels of this blend were made in 2009.

Varietals: 46% Merlot, 21% Syrah, 15% Petit Verdot, 14% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc
Alcohol: 14.6%
Appellation: Napa Valley, California

Heidi Barrett began her illustrious career with a B.S. Degree in Fermentation from UC Davis, and has gained fame for her wines at Dalla Valle and Screaming Eagle, receiving perfect 100 point scores at both. But who’s counting? Heidi has grown her impressive client list of ultra-premium wineries, including her own label, Vin Perdu.

We Love This With

Straight from the Sommelier’s mouth to your table, our resident taster Laura Maniec suggests pairing this rich, ripe wine with grilled pork. We especially love the Publican’s recipe for grilled rib chops with stone fruit, as the mustard-smothered fruity vinaigrette accentuates the wine’s notes of ripe cherries and mocha. Only invite the worthy to enjoy this with you, as this is not for the friend that eats McDonald’s whilst in Paris. Or anywhere, frankly.
