Little Olive, Big Flavor
Though its birthplace lies in the Middle East, the tan, beady Arbequina has made Spain its adopted home since the 17th century. It’s the favored olive of Catalonia, particularly so in the Lerida province, where the Vea family claims all other Spanish Arbequina trees have come. When Don Domingo Vea Santclement bought the Leridian Los Costes estate in 1942, only 350 Arbequina trees graced the property. Thanks to swift and savvy annexation of neighboring lands, over 3250 tress fruit on the Vea clan’s terraced grounds, some of them up to 500 years old. And they need every one; even though teeny Arbequinas are one of the most oil-dense olives (20% oil concentration), it takes up to twelve kilos of fruit to produce one liter of Les Costes oil.
