Babycakes has earned a reputation as one of the best bakeries in New York. 35-year-old Erin McKenna, who is allergic to wheat and dairy, opened the shop in 2005, selling gluten-free, vegan and refined sugar–free treats of the highest caliber. They were so popular she has expanded to L.A. and Disney World.

This double chocolate crumb cake is shockingly good for a vegan baked good. Coconut milk and oil help lend it butter’s classic creaminess. Erin McKenna, the brain behind Babycakes, was in charge of the coupons on her mom’s Saturday morning shopping trips, filling three carts to feed 12 kids for a week. Now Erin runs a booming business on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, using garbanzo flour instead of wheat flour, agave nectar instead of processed sugar (when possible), and dairy-free bases for her lush baked goods.

  • Free of gluten, dairy, egg and soy
