A love for animals brought Barbara Kobren, Deb Mehne and Sue Spiegel together. After throwing around fundraising ideas for their local SPCA chapter in Westchester, New York, the trio serendipitously stumbled upon Barbara’s family nut recipe. With some tweaks, the three turned this delicious mix into a full-fledged business in 2008, which raises money for animal shelters.

The trio experimented with different spices to concoct the perfect amount of heat before settling on cayenne.
