When Martha Stewart was in Maine, she stumbled upon Cranberry Island Kitchen and loved their treats so much, she featured them on her TV show. These soft, mini cakes are baked from a century-old buttermilk cake recipe, dotted with fresh Maine blueberries and glazed with a thin veil of sugary frosting.

One foggy summer kept Karen Haase and Carol Ford away from their usual bike rides and beach walks on Little Cranberry Island and pushed them into the kitchen. After spending days baking together, the two friends dreamed up a business dedicated to desserts inspired by the little island.

Pride of the Island

Whether you’re an early riser or a night owl, these cakes are for you. Dipped in coffee or warmed in the microwave and served a la mode, these little cakes will satisfy a sweet tooth any time of day. Carol Ford has been baking these buttermilk treats for 25 years. Her recipe is inspired by a buttermilk cake that everyone on Little Cranberry Island knows and loves. The famous cake was first served at the Woodlawn hotel, one of the island’s oldest establishments, to its guests for breakfast every morning. Carol and Karen have updated the recipe in their Cranberry Island Kitchen with fresh local fruit, secret spices and a thin glaze of icing.
