From gingery broonies (oatmeal gingerbread) to honeyed whisky cake, Scotland has an illustrious baking history. However, the jewel in the crown, according to John Quigley, chef of Glasgow's Red Onion restaurant, is Scottish shortbread. Willow McGrain makes these buttery, flaky biscuits from her mother's secret recipe.

Here's what you get:

  • Tin of 50 pieces of Heritage Shortbread

Scottish shortbread runs in Willow McGrain’s family. Once Willow began baking her mother’s sweet biscuits for friends, she knew she couldn’t keep them to herself. Rather than disclose the secret family recipe, Willow decided to bake her popular Scottish shortbread for pastry lovers all over the world, and has been doing so from her home state of South Carolina since 2005.

Why We Love It

Shortbread wasn’t an everyday treat for Willow McGrain. Her mother only made Scottish shortbread during Christmastime, when sharing Scottish shortbread symbolizes wishing good health to friends. “She was a strict Scottish disciplinarian when it came to shortbread, because it is only given as a gift,” Willow says. These days, Willow is making her famous shortbread cookies year-round for those commemorating occasions big and small.
