When Five Mountains' Jason Creech was a young monk in Asia, the elders at first refused to let him drink Pu'er, which was reserved for the oldest and wisest. The fermented tea was originally made to preserve the leaves for long journeys along the Silk Road. But today, it is a favorite of connoisseurs. Five Mountains' version, with its toasty, caramel flavor, is specially selected to appeal to the American palate.

Why We Love It

The heirloom tea leaves that make up Sun Ripened Pu'er come from wild, heirloom trees that are between 800 and 1,200 years old and have roots that are several meters deep. To brew the perfect cup, be aware of the three "Ts:" (water) temperature, (steeping) time and total (amount). Steep one tablespoon in eight ounces of boiling water for five to seven minutes. The tea is certified organic in the United States as well as the far-stricter European Union and Japan.
