This is Five Mountains' version of Earl Grey, though they don't call it that because bergamot-scented black tea was popular in East Asia long before the British discovered it. The tea comes from Keemun Prefecture in northern China. The black tea leaves are scented with the oils from the rind of the bergamot, a sour citrus fruit. The result: a robust, caffeinated tea with fragrant citrus notes.

Why We Love It

Legend has it that Earl Grey tea got its name when a Mandarin nobleman gave a box to the 18th century The Earl of Grey. Others refute this theory, saying it is was created in Europe using the oil of Italian Seville oranges. Either way, it's a classic combination. To brew the perfect cup, be aware of the three "Ts:" (water) temperature, (steeping) time and total (amount). Steep one tablespoon in eight ounces of boiling water for five to seven minutes. The tea is certified organic in the United States as well as the far-stricter European Union and Japan.
