Why to buy: Located in the north of the Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin—the famous home of many Grand Crus—has been home to great vines since 630AD. This wine is aged in new oak for 14 to 18 months, and the result is a beautiful, ruby-red hue, a bouquet of black cherries, and a velvety texture that truly reflects the region’s terroir.
Characteristics: Reminiscent of black cherries and blackberries, licorice and the forest, this wine evolves into nutmeg, leather and even mushroomy notes. Its tannins are present but never astringent—this wine has a fairly low acidity—and is fresh and velvety at once. It drinks well now, but will be at its peak between 2014 and 2034.
Varietals: 100% Pinot Noir
Appellation: Gevrey-Chambertin
