Why to buy: Barolo is still the king of reds in Italy’s famous Piedmont region, but this one—of which only 4,000 cases were made—carries a remarkably plebeian price tag. You still get all the bright red cherries, rose petals, spice and licorice a properly regal Barolo brings to the table, and this one is ready to drink right now—and will cellar beautifully for 10 years.
Characteristics: “Soft and inviting through to the finish, the Barolo possesses tremendous class and balance. Succulent red cherries, licorice, rose petals and spices round out the supple finish.” So says Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate about this wine, and we couldn’t agree more. Full of dense tannins, tobacco and licorice notes, and rich cherries, this is a round, open, almost chewy wine. It is simply delicious.
