The Italian King is Back: Massolino Barolo "Parussi" 2007 (94 points)
This product is not currently available.
“The estate’s 2007 Barolo Parussi is a new wine from a recently acquired parcel in Castiglione Falletto and is the only Massolino Barolo not from Serralunga. A delicate, feminine Barolo, the Parussi flows with silky, perfumed red berries. Silky tannins frame the juicy finish. The Parussi has a lot in common with the fragrant Barolos from Castiglione’s top vineyards, including Monprivato and Rocche. It is a fabulous first effort. - 92 points, Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate

Sommelier Selection: "To me, the world of wine is summed up on the palate most perfectly by one grape: Nebbiolo," says Jeff Porter, Wine Director of Del Posto, Mario Batali's temple of Italian fine dining. "The Massolino Barolo is one of the finest examples. Since 1896 the family has worked the land and produced wines that show the best of this historic land. Each vintage tells a specific story and the 2007 tells a story of power, richness, finesse, and beauty. This is a great vintage to cellar and mature for a while, or enjoy today."
The backstory: Sommeliers often say that Barolo is to Burgundy as Brunello is to Bordeaux (meaning that if you love the powerful layers of complexity in an aged Burgundy, a Barolo with a few years in the bottle should be your go-to Italian choice). This wine, which rests over two years in large old oak bottles, drinks wonderfully from day one with decanting, but will peak between 2015 and 2017.
Nose, palate and pairing: Porter explains, "The Massolino Barolo 2007 is classic with its perfumed aromas of cherries, red plums, wild forest berries (frutti di bosco, as the Italians would say), smoked meats and worn leather. Today the wine is exuberant and primary, but with a few years it will tame itself and show the tamer side of this magnificent grape."
Appellation: Barolo DOCG in Piedmont, Italy
