Why to buy: Only 400 cases of this elegant, berry-laden wine exist in the world. Cameron Hughes sourced the majority of his grapes from the renowned Stagecoach Vineyard and Palisades Vineyard—some of the best terroir in Napa Valley, and at half the price of the estate Cabs.
Backstory: Stagecoach Vineyard boasts a high elevation, cool coastal weather and well-drained soils that are ideal for growing Cabernet grapes. The Palisades Vineyard, on the other hand, is located at the outflow of Horns Creek in Calistoga, nestled between two ridges with a gradual slope (similar to Araujo Estate). Grapes from these two sites represent the best that the Napa Valley has to offer in terms of exposure and location.
Nose, palate and pairing: A deep garnet hue is the calling card of this pure, persistent wine. Fresh red and black fruit and soaring aromatics define the bouquet, while mocha, graphite and Crème de Mure (blackberry liqueur) define the palate. Resonant with mouthwatering notes of currant, blueberry, raspberry and plum notes—and a tour de force of a finish—this is a fabulous wine with red meat, but it is also incredible with duck.
Varietals: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
Alcohol: 14.5%
Appellation: St. Helena, Napa Valley, California
