The grapes of Piedmont: Villa Sparina is a family-run estate in the Gavi district of Piedmont that specializes in growing Barbera and Cortese, grapes that have graced the region for over 1,000 years. The Cortese grape boasts a moderate acidity and delicate, flinty, herbal flavor while Barbera is known for it’s bright acidity, big fruit, soft tannins and aging potential.
Nose, palate and pairing:
Gavi di Gavi 2011: With a nod from Ina Garten for it’s full-bodied, smooth texture, this value-oriented white packs a one-two punch. If you love Pinot Grigio but want to further explore Italian white wines, this is a terrific starting point. Layers of white florals and peaches on the nose and a palate packed with pear, lemon, peach and stone. Great with simple classics like roasted chicken, pork tenderloin or seared salmon filets.
Barbera di Monferrato 2010: This wine’s deep ruby color comes from fully ripened grapes. It has a delicate nose of black cherry, mint, pepper and vanilla and an elegant mouth, soft and full. Enjoy this with roasted figs, dressed in balsamic vinegar and topped with crumbles of goat cheese.
In this collection:
- Three bottles of Barbera di Monferrato 2010
- Three bottles of Gavi di Gavi 2011
