Wine 101: Not only is he one of the finest producers of Chenin Blanc, Nicolas Joly is the world’s patriarch to organic winemaking. His celebrated Loire Valley vineyard—which is an appellation in itself that is completely owned by Joly—went entirely biodynamic in 1984. Not a single chemical, insecticide, synthetic product or nitrate goes into his winemaking. Joly has authored numerous books on biodynamic viticulture and his steadfast dedication to the practice and his wines guarantees that anything he produces is extraordinary.
Chenin blanc is a white grape with a viticultural home in Franc’s Loire Valley. The grape is known for its versatility, high acidity and a neutral palate that gives the winemaker an opportunity to express terrior. Outside of France, Chenin blanc is planted most heavily in South Africa, where it is known as Steen.
Nose, palate and pairing: Fresh notes of apple skin, peach and nectarine are balanced by this wines earthy reflection of the land. Lots of minerals and hints of almonds. It’s got a refreshing, acidic finish. Its structure will ensure this wine ages will. This acidity of this wine is perfect for rich dishes like macaroni and cheese or creamy chowders.

Nicolas Joly
The most prestigious producer of chenin blanc in the Loire Valley, Nicolas Joly returned to the fabled Coulée de Serrant in 1977, leaving behind a career in finance. The celebrated vineyard, which comprises its own appellation, was planted in the 1130s.
