Why to buy: Exclusively available through Gilt Taste, the first wine from actor-filmmaker Adrian Grenier and film producer Peter Glatzer's SHFT, a company committed to a sustainable approach to living, this big bold Rhone-style red comes from California's sunny Paso Robles vineyards dedicated to sustainable, organic and bio-dynamic growing. “We set out to make a wine that is decadent, rich, sexy, affordable and happens to be sustainable.”
Nose, palate and pairing: Bright cherries, cloves and vanilla on the nose precede a big, soft, juicy palate. This wine is incredibly rich and pairs especially well with robust Italian flavors, like a dinner of garlicky Caesar salad, sweetly roasted tomato pasta, and a really great grilled steak.
The backstory: Limited in production, this blend is only available on Gilt Taste and SHFT, Glatzer and Grenier’s website that curates cool things that happen to be good for the earth. As the site grew in popularity, Grenier and Glatzer decided they wanted to get in the game with an organic, biodynamic American wine. Teamed up with Saxum Vineyards’s Assistant Wine Maker, Mark Adams, they produced SHFT House Red, a robust blend bursting with ruby fruits from the sun-drenched Paso Robles. The minimal-material bottles have no sleeves over the necks, and the recycled labels use all-natural vegetable dies. On the wine’s label, you’ll see a big pack of black deer and one little red guy running in the opposite direction. “It represents all of us who defy convention,” says Grenier. “And it’s really not that hard to do the right thing.”
Varietals: Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre
Alcohol: 15%
Appellation: Paso Robles, California
Dedicated to providing sustainable solutions to every facet of life, SHFT was founded by film producer Peter Glatzer and actor-filmmaker Adrian Grenier. We Love This With
When we first started talking with Adrian about selling his wine, we asked him where he’d most want to open a few bottles, and what he’d want to eat with it. He took us to his home away from home: Locanda Vini & Olii, an unflashy neighborhood Brooklyn restaurant, a choice that turned out to be more telling than we’d realized. Named for the most fundamental joys of Tuscan living – wine and oil – the restaurant specializes in unusual Italian wines and very rustic Florentine food. READ MORE ABOUT OUR DINNER WITH ADRIAN HERE.
