GILT TASTE EXCLUSIVE: ENJOY 23% OFF UNTIL 10 AM EST THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 16th
Why to buy: This trio is an introduction to three of the most critically-acclaimed winemakers—one who created a co-op to empower local growers, one with a century old estate known for its singular wines, and one dedicated to preserving family techniques to craft authentic, exceptional wines.
In this collection:
Walden Côtes du Roussillon 2008
J. Hofstatter Pinot Nero Meczan 2010
Alphonse Mellot Sancerre Blanc La Moussière 2010
Nose, palate and pairing: With cherry, plum and chocolate on the nose, the Côtes du Roussillon is an exuberant red that has spice and fruit on the palate. It taste pricer than it is and is one of the most versatile reds we’ve found; pair it with anything from roasted poultry, saucy pastas or seared meats.
When it comes to Pinot Noir, this elegant and bright 90 point bottle from J. Hofstatter is a rising star. There are layers of cherry, dark tea and smoke on the nose and it has a medium-bodied palate of cherries and spice. A glass at happy hour can’t be beat or serve it with a roasted bird and classic Caesar salad.
Fabulous to pair with fatty fish like sardines or salmon, the Sancerre has a flinty, herbal bouquet followed by notes of lemon, grapefruit and melon on the palate. It is less bracing than new world Sauvignon Blanc.
What the pros think:
“Once in a while, there comes a wine that brings a smile to your face because it is so delicious, so perfect for the moment and a great value. J. Hofstatter’s Pinot Nero Mecan is one of those wines!”
– Jeffrey Meisel, Gilt Taste Wine Director
“The Walden Côtes du Roussillon 2008 is a Julia Child kind of wine. It's for everyday drinking and cooking.”
- Jeffrey Porter, Wine Director, Del Posto
“Alphonse Mellot is so passionate. He’s one of the most respected winemakers in all of France. He and his son, Alphonse Jr., are utterly entrenched in their craft.”
– Jeffrey Meisel, Gilt Taste Wine Director
