In 2005, former computer consulting entrepreneur Michael Altman cherry-picked pastry chef Jean-Francois Bonnet from renowned restaurant Daniel to help him create Tumbador, a chocolate company whose name comes from the Spanish word for the worker who harvests the cacao pods on a cocoa plantation.

Sweet Mission

 

Tumbador Chocolate hires many of the workers at his Sunset Park, Brooklyn factory through organizations like Strive and Goodwill. Strive, a nonprofit based in East Harlem that offers job placement to the homeless, ex-convicts, and victims of domestic violence, named Tumbador their Employer of the Year when the company was first founded. This community service mission along with eco-friendly packaging makes these chocoaltes especially sweet.
