Why to buy: An undiscovered Napa Valley gem—of which only 240 cases were produced—that exceeds expectations, especially for the price.

Nose, palate and pairing: On the nose, aromas of blackberries, anise, eucalyptus and cola. On the palate, this wine is generous and will improve through the years with proper storage. Pair it with slow-braised meats and roasts with sweet root vegetables.

Backstory: David Grieve may the president of a private investment capital company but he’s committed to making excellent wine. After purchasing the Lovall Valley vineyard, which sits on the Napa-Sonoma county line just north of Carneros—the cool climate and loamy-soils are ideal for growing Bordeaux varietals—he hired winemaker Michael Terrein, who cut his teeth at Hanzell and Acacia, to make his wines. Terrein’s meticulous techniques in the vineyards, including low-yields and hand harvesting, proved fruitful when the 2008 Grieve Sauvignon Blanc received a 90 point score from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, putting the vineyard on the map.

Varietals: 58% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Franc

We Love This With

This blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc is the best of both worlds; It’s partly soft and ripe (think raspberries and chocolate) from the Merlot, but structural and green (think grassy herbs and vegetables) from the Cab Franc. We love it with with a succulent and gamey piece of meat, like venison striploin. The meat’s grassy flavors complement the green notes in the wine.
